Paul Booth MITAI MEWI
Mr. Booth joined Greater Manchester Police in 1977 and transferred to the Traffic Unit in 1989. For some 8 years he patrolled the south side of the Greater Manchester area and the 300+ miles of motorway network surrounding the metropolitan counties of Greater Manchester. During this time he gained a comprehensive experience of all types of road traffic collisions. He joined the Collision Investigation Unit in 1997, where he remained until his retirement in 2007. He provided expert assistance at all fatal and serious collisions and serious vehicle related criminal incidents within the Greater Manchester force area. He successfully completed both standard and advanced courses with the West Midlands Police in Collision Investigation, gaining City and Guilds qualifications in this field of expertise. He holds a full driving licence for motor cars, all classes of large goods vehicles and public service vehicles. He is also qualified as an advanced police car driver.
Mr. Booth has personally investigated over 400 fatal and serious collisions, and was responsible for assessment and training new staff coming into the office, together with checking and validating as correct, other officers work within the unit. As a result he has detailed knowledge of how Police Collision Investigators operate, and the equiptment and procedures they use to assess or calculate vehicle speed. He was authorised by the Chief Constable to examine and weigh motor vehicles, obtaining further City and Guilds qualifications for police examiners. He was also authorised to use handheld and time and distance (Vascar) speed detection devices.
Mr. Booth has been instructed to advanced level in examinations of tyres and received training in ABS diagnostics and braking systems, supplementary restraint systems (airbags etc.), vehicle stability and handling, electronic chassis management systems and a motorcycle appreciation course. He has completed a sampling and packaging course with the Northwest Forensic Science Service and an 'AI Damage' computer aided accident reconstruction technology course with AITS. He also holds City and Guilds certificates at level 2, 3 and 4 in calibration and installation of tachographs, including Tachograph chart analysis.
Mr. Booth has qualified as a Member of the Institute of Traffic Accident Investigators, a Member of the Council for Registration of Forensic Practitioners, a Licentiate Member of City and Guilds of London and a Member of the Expert Witness Institute.
